We Cannot Get to Heaven on a Featherbed

"If I were to meet the slave-traders who kidnapped me and even those who tortured me, I would kneel and kiss their hands, for if that did not happen, I would not be a Christian and Religious today… The Lord has loved me so much: we must love everyone… we must be compassionate!"
-St. Josephine Bakhita

When I was at rock bottom in my alcoholism I would never have guessed that one day I would be grateful for those experiences. But, today I truly am.

I am NO spiritual giant like St. Josephine above, so lets get that out of the way. But like her, I can see that what I went through, although it was LITERALLY Hell on earth, was what was necessary for me to abandon my will and turn to God's.

You see, I'm a real slow learner. On top of that, I'm as stubborn and heard-headed as they come. I needed a good beating or two or 10,000 to get the point.

What I went through, I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. But I'm grateful I did. It has brought me to where I am today--and I like where I'm at.

After all we're all called to be Saints and as St. Thomas More said, "We cannot get to Heaven on a featherbed."

What about you? Are you grateful for the trials in your life?
