Who: St. Ignatius of Loyola

What: He was a Spanish priest and theologian who founded the religious order called the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). He is the Patron Saint of retreats and soldiers.

When: (1491-1556) canonized in 1622 by Gregory XV.

Where: Western Europe

Why: Ignatius is remembered for a multitude of reasons:

☕️He founded the Jesuit Order.

☕️He was a talented spiritual director. His greatest work being the Spiritual Exercises (a simple set of meditations, prayers, and other mental exercises).

☕️He and the Jesuits played a prominent role in the Counter Reformation against Martin Luther and John Calvin.
