ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE

Today, August 14th, we celebrate the Feast day of...

Who: St. Maximilian Kolbe, Priest and Martyr

What: He was a Polish Franciscan friar who volunteered to die in place of a stranger in the German death camp of Auschwitz, during World War II. He was active in promoting the veneration of the Immaculate Virgin Mary.

When: (1894-1941) canonized in 1982 by JPII

Where: Germany, Poland

Why:

☕️ Founded the monastery of Niepokalanow near Warsaw. He also founded monasteries in Japan and India.

☕️ Operated an amateur radio station SP3RN, and founded several other evangelical organizations and publications.

☕️While imprisoned in Auschwitz, a group of men were chosen to be tortured and killed as an example to others not to try and escape. Kolbe was not chosen, but volunteered to take the place of a man with a family.

☕️ After two weeks of dehydration and starvation, he was given a lethal injection. Witnesses said that he raised his left arm and calmly awaited death.

☕️Due to Kolbe's efforts to promote consecration and entrustment to Mary, he is known as the Apostle of Consecration to Mary.

☕️ He is a Patron saint of drug addicts, prisoners, families, and the pro-life movement.

Famous Quote:

“Be a Catholic: When you kneel before an altar, do it in such a way that others may be able to recognize that you know before whom you kneel.”

St. Maximilian Kolbe, pray for us!
