Who: St. Pius X, Pope (b. Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto)

What: Bishop of Rome from 1903 to 1914. Pius was known for his humility, charity, and holiness. He vigorously opposed modernist interpretations of Catholic doctrine, and promoted traditional devotional practices and orthodox theology. He strongly defended the Catholic religion against the indifferentism and relativism of the time.

When: (1835-1914) his papacy lasted from 1903-1914; canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1954.
