Today, August 23rd, we celebrate the feast day of...
Who: St. Rose of Lima, Virgin
What: She was a member of the Third Order of St. Dominic in Lima, Peru who became known for both her excessive practice of mortification, and her care of the needy. A lay member of the Dominican Order, she was the first person born in the Americas to be canonized as a saint.
When: (1586-1617) canonized by Pope Clement X in 1671.
Need to knows:
☕️ Being an attractive young woman, she tried to discourage unwanted male attention by continually rubbing her face with peppers as to cause disfiguring blisters and swelling.
☕️ She wore a silver circlet on her head, studded on the inside, to replicate Jesus's crown of thorns.
☕️ Rose desperately wanted to join a convent, but her parents refused. So she spent most of her life in penance, solitude, and prayer cloistered in her parent's home as a Third Order Dominican.
☕️ She practiced daily adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and took daily communion.
☕️ St. Rose is the patroness of embroiderers, gardeners, florists, those who suffer ridicule for their piety, and people who suffer family problems.
"Without the burden of afflictions it is impossible to reach the height of grace. The gift of grace increases as the struggles increase."
“Apart from the Cross there is no other ‘ladder’ by which we might get to heaven."
St. Rose of Lima, pray for us!
