Attention, Cradle Catholics

“There are not one hundred people in the United States who hate The Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they wrongly perceive the Catholic Church to be.”

-Venerable Fulton Sheen

I can relate. When I converted from being Southern Baptist to Catholic I was ASTONISHED at how wrong I was about what the Catholic Church truly taught.

Five years into this journey, I am now astonished at how many Cradle Catholics I meet that don't know the Catholic faith. The Church has a hard enough time fending off false claims from the outside, much less managing the damage from misunderstandings from the inside.

As Sheen mentions in the quote above there is a massive misunderstanding and subsequent disdain for the Catholic Church. As Catholics, if we can't defend the Church, who will?

Here's some food for thought...

Can you defend the Eucharist, Marian doctrine, and purgatory using scripture in the Bible?

Do you know about the Early Church Fathers, how the bible was assembled, or the heresies they fought?

Do you know about the Protestant Reformation, why we have 7 more books in our Bible than Protestants, or what the debate over the solas are?

Can you properly explain the Keys of St. Peter, or the Pope's infallibility?

Well, what do you think? You know all this stuff?

These are just a few examples. There's plenty more to know than just this, but I think you get my point...

WE CAN'T DEFEND A FAITH WE DON'T KNOW OURSELVES.

If you haven't cracked open your Catechism of the Catholic Church or read a good book on Catholic apologetics in a while, maybe it's time.
